The Sunburst Cross-body Bag // FREE Crochet Pattern

Updated: Aug 9, 2019

I'm so very excited for post, as the Sunburst Cross-body Bag is one that has caught so many peoples attention over the past few weeks. I've been rocking mine with any errands I take as it's a perfect grab-and-go type purse!

If you missed it, this bag is unique as it's composed of just 8 granny squares, then some single-crocheting to attach the squares together, add the strap and add the border. I love being able to create simple, yet textured patterns that any crochet skill level can create.

If you'd like to take a more in-depth look on how to create a Sunburst Granny Square, you can go ahead and head to my previous blog post here where I showcase step-by-step how to make them.

Once you feel comfortable with creating the granny squares, you can go ahead and head below to see what you'll need and then we can get started!

** WAIT, before you continue on. You can purchase the PDF of this pattern right over here in my Etsy shop! Perfect to add to your mobile collection of patterns! **

The breakdown (aka what supplies you'll be needing!):

- An H 5mm Hook

- Any Worsted (4) Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn from Michael's; about 250yds of one skein).

- One Button

- Stitch Markers

- Measuring Tape

- Yarn Needle

Optional: Blocking Mat

Abbreviations:

Sc - Single Crochet

Sl St - Slip Stitch

Ch - Chain

Sizing: 12'' wide x 12.5" high (not including the strap). Strap in included photo is 16" high, however you can always change this by simply adding rows to your strap to make it longer.

Since this bag is made from granny squares stitched together, there is no true gauge, however each granny square should measure approximately 6" x 6".

Pattern:

Step 1 - Start by creating your 8 Sunburst Granny Squares, once you have completed four for the front and four for the back, we are going to be moving on to sc them together.

You may stop right here and block your squares. Once you have finished the blocking process (if desired), you can move along to the next steps.

Step 2 - Start by taking the two granny squares that will make up the two on the bottom for the front. Start at the bottom and while working upwards, join and simply sc the squares together. Once they are attached, take your last two squares for the front and continue to sc them together in the motion going upwards.

Step 3 - At this point you should have the four squares connected vertically. Now starting on the left, start by sc the squares together. Once you reach the cross roads of all four squares, simply keep sc together, making sure you do not miss a stitch while connecting.

Great news; you're practically halfway there to your new cross-body purse that YOU made. Keep going!!

Repeat Steps 1-3 above. Once you have completed both front and back panels continue to Step 4. Here's how the two should be looking:

Step 4 - Lay your front and back panel together with the correct sides facing towards you. Take four stitch markers and place them into the four corners, ensuring that they are going through each panel. This is going to help keep our pieces in-place as we sc connect all around the outside.

Step 5 - Starting in the top left corner, sc around the whole outside of our bag. The left side, bottom and right side. Once you get to the top right corner, stop and continue on to the next step.

Adding the Border, Strap and Button:

We are now at the home stretch! Once you get to the top right corner, following the below steps to add our finishing touches.

Top Border:

Row 1: At the top right corner once you finish connecting; Ch 1 and sc 68 around the top of your bag, sl st together.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 68 around. Sl st together to join.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc 34. Once you finish your 34th sc, ch 60, then proceed to sc 60 in the ch we just made. (We just made the smaller strap to our bag!) Once we are back on the top border, continue on to sc 16. In the next sc on the top, ch 10 then sc in the same st. (This just made the loop for our button!) Once you have two remaining stitches in our round (which should be the 66th sc in the top) ch 80. Then proceed to sc 80 in the ch we just made (this is the longer strap for our bag). End with one sc and joining with a sl st together.

Row 4: Sl st into each st around, once you reach the beginning, you can simply weave in your ends and fasten off.

End by loosely tying your straps together and adding your button for closure. That's all there is to it! Your Sunburst Cross-body Bag is now complete!!
